Catalonia has one of the highest inheritance tax rates in Spain, and without advance planning, heirs can lose a significant share of the estate.
Our client, a property and investment-portfolio owner in Barcelona, came to us after learning how much tax his children would owe under a “default” inheritance. We analyzed the asset structure, designed a lifetime gifting plan, reviewed the tax residency of one of the heirs, and drafted a will accounting for both Spanish and international succession law.
Result: the projected inheritance tax burden dropped substantially.
The key takeaway: inheritance tax in Catalonia isn’t a “deal with it later” issue. Planning started during the asset owner’s lifetime saves heirs substantial sums.
